You are eligible for an assessment by our wheelchair service if you meet all the criteria below:
- You are registered with a Wirral or West Cheshire GP.
- You have a permanent disability or medical condition which will last longer than 6 months and significantly affects your ability to walk around your home.
- You require a wheelchair for longer than 6 months.
- You need to use your wheelchair on a regular basis (more often than not) for mobility purposes only.
Any wheelchair equipment provided is determined following an assessment of your clinical needs and in relation to the eligibility criteria for the provision of equipment.

We are unable to provide wheelchairs for occasional or outdoor use.
Also, we are unable to provide wheelchairs short-term use; however we can offer advice to users regarding temporary loan.
Like all other NHS wheelchair services, we do not supply scooters, or supply powered wheelchairs solely for outdoor use.
If you aren’t eligible for an NHS wheelchair, there are several ways you can get a wheelchair:
- Hire a wheelchair on a short or longer term basis from a local mobility shop or from the Red Cross.
- Purchase a wheelchair privately, you will find that there are low cost options available.
- Through a charitable organisation that offers support with loaning or purchasing equipm,ent.
- Borrow a wheelchair from shopping centres and public venues offering short term loan, including Shopmobility
