The Adult Bladder and Bowel Service supports and treats adults with urinary and bowel symptoms or incontinence.

What we do

The service specialises in continence care and aims to help and support patients and carers as much as possible whilst they are dealing with incontinence.

This can include:

assessment, development and ongoing review of treatment or management plans for your particular continence problem
tips to promote a healthy life style and some behavioural changes to improve or control symptoms i.e. changes to diet or fluid intake
light exercises i.e. pelvic floor exercises
prescribe and review all medications
support bladder or bowel training programmes
provide continence products or appliances when clinically indicated
catheter care clinics
when appropriate, home visits
continence aids to improve access to toilet facilities
catheter care
telephone support for patients and healthcare professionals
training health and social care professionals in basic continence care.

You will get ongoing support whether you are a patient, carer or healthcare professional.

What we treat

Approximately one in four people will experience bladder or bowel symptoms. It can affect men and women of all ages. Despite being a common problem it’s still something that we may feel embarrassed about.

Seeking help can really improve your quality of life with the right assessment treatments and management programme. With the right treatments and products everyone can be helped to effectively manage, improve and in many cases even cure their condition.

Continence symptoms and problems can include:

stress incontinence: passing urine when you laugh, sneeze or cough
urge incontinence: not being able to ignore a sudden urge to pass urine
Nocturia: waking up more than a couple of times in the night to pass urine
functional incontinence: having a condition or disability which stops you being able to remove your clothes quickly or get to the toilet in time
bowel incontinence: difficulty controlling bowel movements

If you’ve been experiencing any of the above speak to your GP or healthcare professionals as soon as possible.

Joint home visits are offered with Community Nurses to support housebound patients with symptoms of bladder or bowel and catheter related problems.

How to access the service

The service can be accessed by referral via your GP or other healthcare professional.

You will be seen within 6 weeks of contacting the service with an appointment either in clinic or at home.

Prior to your first appointment you may be asked to complete a diary of your food and fluid intake and frequency volume chart and quality of life tools.

Home Delivery Service for Continence pads and products

You might need to use continence pads or products to help manage your problem. The service works in partnership with a third party containment product supplier, NHS Supply Chain to provide a home delivery service from Monday – Friday (excluding bank holidays) for the products you need. This could be for one-off orders or for repeat orders.

Your orders will be delivered in discreet packaging. If you want to activate your next order please call NHS Supply Chain Home Delivery service on 0800 030 4466 and press * (the star key). Please have your pin number ready to activate your order. If you do not know your pin number don’t worry – you will be directed to a customer service advisor. The team is available Monday – Friday, 7.00am – 6.00pm.
