This care plan is designed to help you increase your breast milk supply so you can exclusively breastfeed your baby and support their healthy growth and development.
There are no known risks to you or your baby when following this care plan.
Steps to support milk supply
Skin-to-skin contact – spend regular time holding your baby skin-to-skin to stimulate milk production.
Frequent feeding – breastfeed 10 – 12 times every 24 hours to maintain and boost supply.
Drain both breasts – ensure both breasts are well drained at each feed
- If not, express milk after feeding
- Hand expression is especially effective for collecting fat rich milk
Night feeds matter – do not skip night feeds. They are crucial for milk production.
Avoid long gaps – your baby should not go more than one 4 – 6 hour stretches without feeding in a 24 hour period.
Good latch and positioning – ensure your baby is well positioned and latched correctly at the breast.
Offer both breasts – let your baby feed from both breasts during each session.
Use breast compressions – gently compress the breast when your baby is not actively swallowing. Ask your health visitor or peer supporter for a demo.
Switch when needed – if your baby stops drinking even with compressions, switch to the other breast.
Watch for active feeding – look for signs like soft swallowing and a rhythmic suck-swallow pattern.
