Hall Crowns: A Guide for Parents What is a Hall Crown?
A Hall Crown is a silver cap made of stainless steel, nickel, and chrome. It is used to protect and strengthen back teeth (molars) in children that have decay, are broken, or did not form properly. The dentist chooses the right size crown and cements it in place to cover the whole tooth.
Why is this technique used?
The Hall Technique is a simple and comfortable way to treat decayed teeth. It does not require any injections or drilling. Research shows it is an effective and preferred treatment for both children and parents. Not every tooth can be treated using a hall crown. If the decay is too deep, an extraction may be recommended instead.
What do they look like?
Hall Crowns are shiny and silver. Some children call them:
A Shiny Helmet
A Shiny Princess Crown
A Twinkle Tooth
How is a Hall Crown placed?
Placing a Hall Crown usually takes two visits: If needed, the dentist places a small elastic band (separator) between the teeth to create space.
At the next visit, the separator is removed, and the correct-sized crown is placed over the tooth. The dentist uses tooth glue and gentle pressure to secure it.
What to Expect Afterwards
- The crown may feel tight for a couple of days.
- The gum around the crown may look slightly white at first.
- Eating and speaking may feel different at first.
- It may feel high to bite on, but this settles in a few weeks.
- If needed, you can give your child pain relief such as paracetamol.
How Long Do They Last?
Hall crowns usually stay in place until the baby tooth naturally falls out, taking the crown with it. In rare cases, the crown may need to be removed and replaced, or the tooth may need to be extracted.
