We are proud to have joined other NHS organisations across the country in implementing positive environmental change through the ‘Greener NHS’ Net-Zero target – a target that aspires to deliver the world’s first Net-Zero health service by eliminating all net carbon emissions by 2045.
Our environment is changing and poses a threat to our planet, our people, and our health, so as an NHS Trust and healthcare provider, we have a responsibility to make changes that will support efficiency and sustainably as much as possible. Our Green Plan is our commitment to reduce our impact on the environment, deliver lower carbon, more sustainable care and meet the NHS net zero carbon emissions target. See our Green Plan here.
Healthcare is a major contributor to climate change because of its significant carbon footprint. Our Green Plan sets out our aims, principles, and targeted actions to reach the net zero target, embed sustainability values into our core business and ensure that the high-quality care we provide today is available tomorrow and to future generations.
We believe that by working together with patients, service users, staff, local communities, and partners we can help make our environment and wider planet cleaner, greener and healthier.
Our green plan, forming part of our Trust strategy, has been put in place with clear actions on how we will improve and play our part in becoming smarter – environmentally, economically, and socially and will help us to achieve our ‘greener’ targets will help and create the best environment possible for our people, patients, and our communities, for now and for the future.
Our Green Plan details our strategy, targets, and objectives to take us through to 2025 with our key focus areas:
- Embedding sustainability across the Trust
- Making our buildings more energy efficient
- Promoting active travel such as cycling, lift sharing and public transport
- Innovative approaches to care and utilising digital platforms
- Sustainable medicines
- Reducing plastic use
- Waste management
- Improving biodiversity and green spaces across our sites
- Promote healthy lifestyles and environments
