You have been asked to accompany someone who is having dental treatment under Inhalation Sedation.
Patients can feel less anxious if they breathe a mixture of Oxygen and Nitrous Oxide during their dental treatment. They may feel slightly drowsy during the sedation. The effects of this type of sedation are short lived and have mostly worn off by breathing oxygen for 3 minutes after the dental treatment has been completed.
Before the sedation
The patient should contact the clinic if they have a cold or blocked nose as the gases
need to be breathe through the nose. The sedation won’t work if they can’t breathe
through their nose. We will need to postpone the appointment until they can breathe
more easily.
- The patient must let us know if they might be pregnant
- They should dress in loose fitting, comfortable clothes
- They should tie back long hair
- The patient should eat a light meal before the sedation
- They should not drink alcohol or take recreational drugs for 24 hours before the
appointment - They should take any routine medication before the appointment
- They should go to the toilet before coming into the treatment room
- They should bring their normal inhalers with them if they have any
- They should not bring any children with them
It is important that you:
- Let us know if you may be pregnant and are staying in the treatment room
- Are responsible for taking them home
- Should not bring any children with you
After the sedation:
- The patient will have been given a telephone number of who to contact if you have any
concerns. - You must be present with the patient as they leave the dental surgery. Some patients
take a little longer than others to be ready to go home so please be aware that a
precise time cannot always be given - The dentist will explain to the patient which pain relief medicines they may take
- Patients should take their usual prescribed medicines unless directed otherwise by their
doctor or dentist - Children should go home to rest for 2 hours before returning to school
